Congratulations to The Broad Superintendents Academy Graduating Class of 2007
Eleven senior military leaders, business executives and career educators nationwide have graduated from the 2007 Broad Superintendents Academy, a 10-month executive management training program run by The Broad Center to prepare working CEOs and other top executives from business, non-profit, military, government and education sectors to lead urban public school systems. Eight of the graduates are already working in urban school districts to improve student achievement. The Broad Center would like to congratulate The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2007 and wish them the best of luck as they work towards making improvements in education reform.

A Day in the Life: Pittsburgh Public Schools
Office of High School Reform
7:00-7:30am - walk to work
One of the great things that my new position has allowed me is the chance to walk to work. I live about 2 miles from the Board building, and I get up to give myself enough time to be able to walk. The mornings are getting a little darker (and colder!) as winter creeps in, and the fact is that I have not even approached the number of years I would need at the Board to get a parking spot-so this is the only option other than the bus. However-it is a chance to clear my head in the morning, not be attached to my Blackberry and think about the things that need done during the day. I always manage to arrive with more energy than when I started.
7:30-9:00am - catching up on email and phone messages, touching base with Derrick Lopez, Chief of High School Reform
One interesting thing I am learning in this position is that people start work early. By 7:30, most people are already at their desks-but even so, meetings typically don't start until about 9:00, so I have a chance to catch up on emails and stop by my boss's office to check in on the days activities. Today we determined that we have triple booked school facilities visits, so we quickly decide how to split them up most efficiently so we are able to get the information we need without spending 90% of our day on it. I agree to hit the first one with a colleague, he will take the second, and we will both go to the third.

9:00-9:50am - Meeting - visit to Elementary School for facilities review
Our most recent initiative involves the closing of a few programs in the city, and the conversion of some middle school grades in a K-8 building into a more comprehensive 6-12 school. Unfortunately, this means reallocation of monies to follow students. Today we need to go to a school that will no longer be receiving a middle school gym since it will no longer serve middle school students. We want to find a way to still allocate play space for students in grades K-5, but understandably there are some people who are not happy about our visit. This is not the easiest part of the job-and it probably is the part that takes the biggest toll on me.
9:50-10:05am - drive back to Board building with colleague
10:05-11:00am - Meeting with Athletics Department
Anyone who knows anything about Pittsburgh knows that we love our sports! So when we made a decision to create some smaller high schools that would have only grades 6-9 in their first year, the obvious question came up about providing opportunities for 9th graders to play on high school sports teams. This presents some very unique challenges, so luckily our head of athletics has some initial thoughts that we go over. I promise to lay it out in a document to the larger group and superintendent for feedback. This issue is not going away anytime soon.
11:00-12:30pm - Back to desk to catch up with team members and plan for upcoming parent meetings
We have multiple evening meetings coming up with parents in the next couple of weeks, as well as a public comment where we expect over 100 people to sign up to speak. The past month has typically meant 3-4 nights a week out in schools until sometimes 9 or 10 at night meeting with community members. This means that we need to really be on our toes with information, data and plans for engagement. This 90 minutes in the middle of the day to think about our plans for the next two meetings is just what I need to feel more confident leading into the coming events.
12:30-1:30pm - Meeting - visit to High School for facilities review
One of our high schools is in the midst of a major facilities situation that will mean relocating all of their 1,130 students to other buildings. One of the programs that needs to move is the robotics program, and they need a huge amount of space to continue working with their current program. We happen to have a large school with lots of empty space and strong leadership that seems like a possible location, so we have to head over to that building with the facilities team to scope it out.
Lunch
I snack on fruit and snacks I've brought from home at my desk and during meetings.
1:30-2:30pm - Meeting runs over at school-drive back to Board building with facilities colleague
I also got rid of my car when I took this job since I knew I could walk to work. However-I did not focus enough on all the different visits to schools I would need to make. Luckily I work with some incredible, seasoned Board colleagues who don't mind having me in the passenger seat a lot of the time!
2:30-3:30pm - Partnership Development Discussion
The federal government has an incredible grant titled GEAR UP which focuses on funding for preparing low income students with resources to prepare them for college starting when they are in middle school. Our grants department is hard at work to ensure we are competitive for this grant, and they want to meet with our team, the Office of High School Reform, to hear more about how our work aligns with the grant, and what partnerships might make sense to include. Although the timeline for the grant is incredibly quick, and it is due in late December, the grants team seems motivated by what we share.

4:30-5:30pm - Steering Committee Meeting
One of the projects I am managing has a steering committee meeting this evening. We have managed to get together a very impressive group of teachers, parents and community members to offer their expertise to our potential school-and they are coming together tonight to talk about building space and community partnerships. This is a great chance to make sure we are investing all in our work, and to know more about what people in various parts of the city are thinking about schools.
5:30-5:35pm - run up the street in the snow to Carnegie Mellon University
5:35-7:00pm - Broad Residency Information Session
Carnegie Mellon University is hosting a Broad Residency info session this evening, and I agreed back in the summer to come out and talk. This is incredibly re-inspiring. Our team has taken quite a public beating around some of our work, and frankly, it is growing harder to keep focused on what we believe it as we continue to face challenges and obstacles. Being able to go out and speak out the Residency with a colleague, and saying out loud the words that keep me going will tide me over for the next few weeks. And Broad provided free pizza-which was just what I needed!
7:00-10:00pm - Basketball Game!
One of the reasons I feel so lucky to be in this position is that I am a graduate of the Pittsburgh Public Schools, and my parents live less than 3 miles from me. My dad managed to snag tickets to a Pitt basketball game for the evening, so I sneak out with my boyfriend and some work colleagues and head out to watch a game in the first snowfall of the year. My temptation is to go home and get a little extra sleep-but I am learning that this is a marathon, not a sprint, and I have to make time for the fun as well. And, of course, while I was at the game I ran into some people I know who wanted to know more about our initiatives. In most ways-my work permeates all that I do. And I love it.
