Military

Increasingly, school boards are turning to former military officers to lead their school systems.  Districts that have in recent years appointed former military officers as superintendents include Seattle, Los Angeles, Providence, R.I, and Aurora, Colo.  Numerous other former military officers are serving in cabinet-level positions in urban districts across the country.

Military officers, especially those at the E-9 and O-6 levels or higher, bring a strong background of leadership, a commitment to serve, and specific skills in areas like operations, finance and facilities management all of which are transferrable to senior roles in urban school districts. The Broad Superintendents Academy teaches Fellows how to leverage these skills in a school district. In addition, Fellows develop new skills through exposure to education-specific issues in areas like curriculum and instruction and student assessment.
