JOHN SCANLAN

The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2007
Deputy Superintendent of Administration
Rochester City School District, N.Y.
Retired Captain, U.S. Navy

“The democratic experiment that created our nation continues to face many threats, both external and internal to our country. After a career of defending our citizens from external aggression and terrorism, I am focusing my leadership and energy on eliminating the educational and economic divide faced by too many of our nation’s children. We must not only provide each child access to quality education, but we must also challenge them to achieve excellence in their learning and their lives. The education of every child is the only catalyst that can transform lives, bridge growing financial disparity, overcome societal barriers, unify our citizens and create the inclusive society needed to sustain our democracy.”

In August 2008, John Scanlan was appointed deputy superintendent of administration of the Rochester City School District, which serves 34,000 students in 58 schools. Previously, he served as chief operating officer of the Oklahoma City Public Schools. Scanlan recently completed a 26-year career in the U.S. Navy where he served as the commanding officer for the Fleet Readiness Center Southeast leading more than 4,500 engineers, logisticians, technicians and mechanics encompassing 128 trades.
